Respect Together (formerly the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape) is marking a momentous milestone: 50 years of advancing the rights, dignity, and well-being of communities.
This anniversary is more than a celebration of past achievements—it’s a renewed call to action for the future we are striving to create. With the steadfast support of valued partners like you, we aim to amplify our impact, strengthen our mission, and secure another half-century of progress toward a world free from violence and full of respect.
At Respect Together we are committed to disrupting the root causes of sexual violence, fostering safe, equitable communities, and cultivating a culture of respect for all. Respect Together’s main divisions are NSVRC and PCAR, and our partnerships include RALIANCE and NSAC, the National Sexual Assault Conference©. Collectively, we are working together to create a culture in the United States – and beyond – that values and upholds all people being treated with respect and free from all forms of sexual violence and oppression.
Founded in 1975, Respect Together (formerly the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape) has been at the forefront of supporting and advocating for the collective needs of rape crisis centers across Pennsylvania. As one of the first state sexual assault coalitions, the Pennsylvania Coalition to Advance Respect, in the United States—and one of the few to secure a dedicated line item in the state’s annual budget—our impact has been both pioneering and transformative.
Over the years, we’ve expanded far beyond Pennsylvania, adding the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, becoming a leading national resource in the fight against sexual violence. Since 2000, we’ve proudly hosted the world’s largest resource library dedicated to addressing and preventing sexual violence. Each April, we coordinate Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), galvanizing communities across the nation to take action and promote prevention.
With nearly 50 years of leadership, Respect Together continues to set the standard for advocacy, innovation, and resources that empower survivors, prevent violence, and build safer communities for all.
50 Year History Timeline
Denim Day is a day of action each year during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, where individuals are encouraged to wear denim to combat victim-blaming and educate others about sexual violence. The history of Denim Day goes back to a high-profile Italian rape trial where the survivor was blamed for her rape because of the type of jeans she was wearing.
This year Denim Day is observed on April 30. We encourage 50 Years Forward guests to make a statement by wearing denim in dressy and creative ways at our anniversary event.
